Northglenn Arts and Swallow Hill Music are excited to announce a concert by Cajun music superstars BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet at the Parsons Theatre in Northglenn on Saturday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m.

For the past 50 years, BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet has been making some of the most potent and popular Cajun music on the planet. Born out of the rich Acadian ancestry of its members, and created and driven by bandleader Michael Doucet’s spellbinding fiddle playing and soulful vocals, BeauSoleil is notorious for bringing even the most staid audience to its feet.

BeauSoleil’s distinctive sound derives from the distilled spirits of New Orleans jazz, blues rock, folk, swamp pop, Zydeco, country and bluegrass, captivating listeners from the Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans, to Carnegie Hall, then all the way across the pond to Richard Thompson’s Meltdown Festival in England.
In a wide-ranging interview with Roots World, Doucet spoke about the foundations of Cajun music, its many influences, and how it continues to influence contemporary music.

“The Cajuns mixed it up socially and musically with all sorts of folks along their journeys and after they dug in down in Louisiana,” he explained. As a cultural crossroads, Louisiana provided a backdrop where the music blended with other musical traditions from the Americas, Africa, and Europe.

“What I really believe about Cajun music is that (it) is the most American music there is,” he said. “We play music that people feel like they’ve heard before, like it brings up memories they didn’t know they had.”

In October, Northglenn Arts and Denver-based nonprofit Swallow Hill Music collaborated for the first time, bringing folk legend Tom Rush to the Parsons Theatre. The concert sold out, and both artist and audience felt right at home the night of the show, confirming the two organizations are a natural fit to work together.

“The Arts always have a level of risk whenever you’re putting something out there that you are inviting folks to buy a ticket to, so I’m happy that we are in this together,” Northglenn Arts Executive Producer Michael Stricker said of the burgeoning partnership with Swallow Hill. “This is how we continue to diversify the work we do, by partnering with extraordinary companies like Swallow Hill, to offer high quality and accessible programming in the north metro area.”

The Parsons Theatre is a state-of-the-art performing arts space located within the Northglenn Recreation Center. The 335 seat venue will allow music lovers to experience this legendary band in an intimate setting that is also robust enough to demonstrate why they are high-energy, festival favorites.

“This concert represents where we’ve been and where we are going,” Swallow Hill CEO Jessy Clark said. “We’ve hosted Beausoleil avec Michael Doucet for decades, and they embody the vitality of a cherished and still-evolving musical tradition. And while our partnership with Northglenn Arts is just beginning, we share with them a passion to bring memorable cultural experiences to audiences in a way that is welcoming and accessible.”

Northglenn Arts and Swallow Hill Music are both members of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), and ticket sales from events like this concert support both organizations in continuing their missions of expanding access to the arts.
