| Northglenn Arts and Swallow Hill Music are proud to present legendary Irish folk music group Altan at the Parsons Theatre in Northglenn on Saturday, October 24 at 7 p.m. The quintet’s reputation for delivering highly energetic yet intimate concerts is unquestioned. Chicago Weekly writes, “Thought by many to be the finest traditional Irish combo working today, Altan seamlessly blends dazzling instrumental prowess and the gorgeously delicate vocals of Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh.” Even more direct in their praise, Irish Echo writes “under no circumstances should they be missed in concert.” TICKETS: See Altan in Concert at the Parsons Theatre at Northglenn Arts on October 24 |
| For over 40 years Altan have remained a cornerstone of traditional Irish music and their sound continues to resonate across the world. Now in their fifth decade, Altan’s commitment to their native County Donegal’s musical heritage ensures that their influence will endure for generations to come. (Article continues after video.) |
“It’s all really based on the locality where we’re from,” Altan vocalist Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh explained to Public Radio station WNMU in a 2022 interview when asked about their music selection and the traditions they uphold.
“Our music and songs are basically from the Northwest, which is County Donegal… It is a lovely place, and a part of the thing as well is that we speak Gaelic there, which is an ancient Celtic language, so I sing a lot of Gaelic songs, and also in English.”
In addition to Mhaonaigh, who also plays fiddle, the group is rounded out by Ciaran Curran on bouzouki, Mark Kelly on guitar, accordion player Martin Tourish, and their newest member, fiddler and singer, Clare Friel.
This will be the third collaboration between Swallow Hill and Northglenn Arts, following highly successful concerts by Tom Rush last fall, and Beausoleil avec Michael Doucet earlier this year.
The concert is presented in partnership with KGNU Community Radio.
The Parsons Theatre is a state-of-the-art, 335-seat performing arts space located within the Northglenn Recreation Center.
Both Northglenn Arts and Swallow Hill Music are members of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), and ticket sales from events like this concert support both organizations in continuing their missions of expanding access to the arts.
