The Melting Pot: Bluegrass & Beyond
This assembly examines the ways in which cultural traditions combine to form something new. Students will see live performances with folk and bluegrass instruments like guitar, mandolin, and banjo. With musical examples, students will see how the United States melting pot of musical cultures combined to create bluegrass.

Pioneer Music of the Mountain West
Waves of explorers and settlers all contributed to the Mountain West’s musical heritage, including various acoustic and folk traditions. During this performance, musicians will share songs of mountain men, ranchers, miners and farmers, and will finish the assembly with recognizable and modern songs. Audience will have a chance to play period-relevant instruments with the musicians!

Rhythm: A Multicultural Music Experience
This assembly explores rhythm and percussion as it evolved out of Africa through the Caribbean, Brazil, and up through the Americas. Students will hear dun duns, djembes, talking drums, and congas. Students will also have an opportunity to play percussion instruments with the assembly performers.

We Will Rock You: History of Rock-and-Roll
Rock-and-roll music emerged in the 1940s-1950s in the United States, a style evolved from rhythm & blues. Rock-and-roll songs typically include electric guitar, electric bass, and drum set. Our performers play songs from rock-and-roll origins like Chuck Berry, its heyday like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, and contemporary interpretations like The White Stripes.

Small Group Workshops

For small groups up to 30

School Workshops engage smaller groups of students in hands-on activities. Many of the Interactive Performances can also be formatted as Workshops, all of which address state education standards.

Instrument Petting Zoo
Our Instrument Petting Zoo is an opportunity for participants to try different acoustic instruments! This is a hands-on experience for any age, led by our knowledgeable staff of “Zookeepers.” Instruments include ukuleles, hand drums, guitars, mandolins, banjos, mini-pianos, and more! Swallow Hill provides the instruments.

Ukulele Workshop
Our Ukulele Workshop introduces participants to the parts and history of the ukulele, as well as how to play it! Participants will learn some chords and a song! Swallow Hill will provide the ukuleles for each participant.

Sing Along, Move Along
Our early childhood teachers lead students in an interactive musical class featuring dance, creative movement, song, percussion instruments, and more! Programs can be adapted to fit educational and seasonal themes. Swallow Hill Music will provide instruments.

Percussion Workshop
Our Percussion Workshop introduces participants to hand drums and percussion from all over the world. Participants learn basic hand technique, rhythm, and skills to play together as an ensemble! Swallow Hill will provide the instruments!

Harmonica Workshop
Our Harmonica Workshop gives participants an opportunity to discover a new and immediate form of self-expression through the harmonica. Participants will learn how to play two songs and will be given a harmonica of their own!

Enrichment Classes

For school groups up to 15

Swallow Hill Music Enrichment Classes are designed to supplement or replace during-school music classes, usually scheduled for 8-week, semester- or year-long sessions and generally meet during the day. Swallow Hill Music Instructors engage students of all ages and abilities, and each topic can be customized to meet the needs of schools, classrooms, or organizations. Our Instructors specialize in making music accessible! Each class is generally 60 minutes long, depending on grades or ages of students, and each class is limited to 15 participants.

Voice & Vocal Performance

Break out of your comfort zone, bust out your singing skills and develop your stage presence with this opportunity to grow as a performer. This is for people wanting to get serious about performing, hitting those notes, and wowing the audience. Beginners are welcome to commit to this adventure and will feel empowered to get in front of the crowd as you and your fellow performers will have multiple live gigs through this class.

Guitar Enrichment Class

Get introduced to the basic of guitar! Learn melody, harmony, and rhythm in a relaxed group environment. Learn pop, rock, blues, and traditional tunes to build up an accessible repertoire of songs and skills. Best for 4th grade students and older.

Ukulele Enrichment Class

Welcome to the wonderful world of ukulele! We’ll learn how to tune our ukes, strum basic chords, and pluck simple melodies and we explore a collection of fun and easy songs from all genres. Best for 2nd grade students and older.

Music Production Enrichment Class

In this class, every student gets a chance to explore their imagination while engaging with cutting-edge audio recording technology. We invite you to explore music through sharing favorite tunes and artists, and apply similar production methods to create original songs.
Best for 4th grade students and older.

Percussion & Drumming Enrichment Class

Learn to play conga, djembe, or ashiko! Start with basic playing technique and traditional rhythms from Africa and Cuba. Learn to play along with recorded music, and play as a group. You’ll also learn to play other percussion instruments like shakers, claves, tambourines, and more!

Harmonica Enrichment Class

Our Harmonica Classes gives participants an opportunity to discover a new and immediate form of self-expression through the harmonica. Participants will learn how to play songs, melodies, and will receive a harmonica of their own! Best for 2nd grade students and older.

Music History & Appreciation

Although the definition of music varies throughout the world, every known culture partakes in some musical expression; music is culturally universal! Students will listen to recordings and live performances and reflect on its character and cultural context.

This class is most often responsive to student interest and background, so this is best for 9th grade students and older.
