DENVERSwallow Hill Music and KUNC – Community Radio for Northern Coloradoare pleased to announce the second edition of Live@Swallow Hill broadcasting this Saturday, November 5, 7:00pm.

This edition will feature The Wood Brothers in a broadcast of their September 2011 performance in Denver presented by Swallow Hill Music at the L2 Arts & Culture Center.

Live@Swallow Hill will be a monthly broadcast on KUNC.  Upcoming dates and artists will be announced in the near future.  In the meantime, tune in this Saturday to listen to Chris & Oliver Wood’s talented performances.  A stream and set list of the show will be made available at kunc.org on Monday, 11/7, and more information on The Wood Brothers is below.

About the Artists:
The Wood Brothers, who both grew up in Boulder, pursued separate projects for some 15 years before deciding to join forces in 2004. Chris, best known as part of the influential jazz-funk trio Medeski Martin & Wood, and brother Oliver decided to adapt the blues, folk and other roots-music sounds they loved as kids into their own evocative sound. The sibling singers are renowned for twining their voices in a sort of high-lonesome harmony blend.

You wouldn’t necessarily gather this fact from listening to Smoke Ring Halo in which Oliver and Chris refine their rich, spacious sound – the brothers simmer, swing and soar, shifting moods and time signatures with aplomb.

Paste Magazine lauds; “Smoke Ring Halo only further cements the pair’s reputation as masters of soulful folk.”   Nate Chien of the New York Times exclaims, “This band has been working at something and it shows.”

Wendy Woo & Nina Storey - 10th Anniversary Concert at Swallow Hill Music
Saturday, January 21st, 8pm, $20 advance
As Colorado’s music scene has exploded over the past few years, one of its mainstays has been Wendy Woo. Anticipating the rise of the independent artist, Woo formed her own corporation, Woo Music. Through that she runs her own record label (eight albums), publishing company, booking agency, and management company.

2011 marks the release of her band’s ninth album “Austerity,” a collaboration of that includes rock, pop, country, and funk songs written by all five members. The Wendy Woo Band was also recognized as the winner of the Best Local Band category of Channel 7′s 2011 A-List competition, voted by Channel 7′s viewers.

Belting out self-penned, soul-funk tunes with a voice described as being “…half Janis and half Alanis,” Nina Storey‘s music has been featured on CNN Showbiz Today, MTV Online, Rolling Stone Online and People Magazine. DENVER –  Swallow Hill Music and 97.3 KBCO present David Wilcox Friday,March 2. David, known for his James Taylor-like music, performs solo – aside from his acoustic guitar, of course. His music is filled with stories of challenging situations, elusive ideas and inspiring metaphors of hope.

Opening for David Wilcox, is Dave McGraw & Mandy Fer, a dynamic duo who are releasing their first album, Seed of a Pine, in early 2012. Come hear it first when they take the stage for their album release Saturday, March 3 at Tuft Theatre.

Show Details – On-Sale, Thursday, 10/27, 10am
David Wilcox
Friday, March 2nd, 8pm, $28 advance @ Daniels Hall – Swallow Hill Music
David Wilcox allows his music to be his compass in life. And why not? This contemporary singer/songwriter takes the listener on a journey – not just geographically, but emotionally. His most recent album Reverie, released in 2010, adds one more instrument: a concert hall. Recorded “live,” but with no applause, it was done live to capture the energy of songs taking flight through many ears, minds, and hearts.

David has been writing songs for 30 years, has released 17 albums and has sold over 750,000 albums. In 2008, he was honored with a silver award in Acoustic Guitar’s singer/songwriter category. Described by Boston Globe, David is “fueled by brilliantly articulate guitar, an honestly pretty baritone, and deft lyrics, he combines the best of both pop and modern folk aesthetics.”

Dave McGraw & Mandy Fer
Album Release – Saturday, March 3rd, 8pm, $10 advance @ Tuft Hall – Swallow Hill Music

Human chemistry is indeed a mercurial thing. And adding any artistic endeavor into that mysterious balance can, every so often, create some true magic. For Dave McGraw and Mandy Fer (pronounced fair), the delicate intertwining of music, life and that always-fine interpersonal equilibrium has borne fruit in the shape of a truly one of a kind artistic partnership.

With the 2012 release of the songwriters’ first official collaboration, Seed of a Pine, the duo’s striking ability to blend their lush folk and Americana-influenced styles is on full display. Dave’s consoling, velvety baritone voice, reminiscent of Greg Brown, coupled with Mandy’s soaring and subtly powerful vocal approach, likened to that of Patty Griffin, puts a spit-shine polish on the finely crafted body of songs they have generated together. The intricate weavings of their vocal harmonies are undeniably exceptional. Dave’s hard-hitting tunes echo narratives of the culture and landscape of the American West, wherein he thoughtfully spins tales of everyday folks looking for a little something more in their earthly existence. Mandy takes a more dreamy approach, evoking complex and ethereal imagery within her sultry and haunting melodies. Her potent electric lead guitar playing, in the vein of jazz-fusion guitarist John Scofield, bravely propels this duo through their uniquely heartfelt and spirited live performances, winning over audiences night after night.

Dave and Mandy have amassed an admirable résumé and an ever-expanding fan base during their time playing music together. Having toured the U.S. from coast to coast, performing in highly esteemed theaters to intimate listening rooms, the pair has honed their skills sharing stages with fellow troubadours including Willy Porter, the Swell Season, Tony Furtado, Jeffrey Foucault and many others.

The Big Little
The Big Little is the continuing musical conversation that began five years ago at one of those auspicious, potentially historic musical meetings when Bonnie Paine, Daniel Rodriguez and Dango Rose of Elephant Revival met David Tiller and Enion Pelta-Tiller of Taarka and ThaMusemeant.

All five of these unique musicians had been developing their own unique styles of music and songwriting. Elephant Revival was just beginning to shape their distinctive, collective sound while Taarka and ThaMusemeant were critically acclaimed, innovative forces in a then undefined musical genre which some have come to call Transcendental Folk.

The conversation has covered many genres including Celtic, Bluegrass, Gypsy, Neo-Traditional, Folk blood roots, and blood rhythms, and now has evolved into The Big Little which continues the joyous, musical play.

Danielle Ate the Sandwich
Danielle Ate the Sandwhich is a Youtube star with her videos and has been featured twice on the Youtube home page. While she is a new media guru, her success there stems from true, old-school musical talent. Denver’s Westword described Danielle as, “cripplingly enchanting with lyrics telling the story of a generation coming of age in an age of uncertainty.” She has toured nationally, and you have likely heard her music on various television shows that have licensed her songs – come hear her live!

Hayes Carll – Acoustic
Saturday, January 28th, 8pm, $18 advance @ L2 Arts & Culture Center

Hayes Carll hasn’t been resting on his laurels since topping critics polls and winning awards for his 2008 album, Trouble in Mind. Instead, he’s been on the road nearly nonstop, and along the way he’s been inspired to write a crop of new tunes that the acclaimed songwriter says are “a layman’s take on our country – a snapshot of America in some small way.” The result: the sharply drawn collection KMAG YOYO (and Other American Stories).  Fiery rock, twangy country, pensive folk and even a touch of gospel comprise KMAG YOYO’s sonic palette, and Hayes will be sharing that palette unplugged when he arrives in Denver.

Maura O’Connell
Saturday, March 3rd, 8pm, $24 advance @ Daniels Hall – Swallow Hill Music

Born and raised in County Clare, Ireland, Maura O’Connell’s first public role was as lead singer with the tradition-oriented DeDannan, but her restless muse could not be safely contained under the banner of Celtic music, and she soon discovered both an interest in and affinity for progressive American roots music.  In Maura’s most recent album Naked with Friends she represents her wide-ranging musical sensibility with five traditional tunes in both English and Irish, as well as other powerful songwriting regardless of genre.

Acoustic Eidolon
Saturday, January 14th, 8pm, $18 advance @ Daniels Hall – Swallow Hill Music

Acoustic Eidolon featuring Joe Scott on double neck guitjo and Hannah Alkire on cello are from Colorado and have graced stages throughout the US, Europe, Australia and Canada with their signature “new acoustic” sound and boundless possibilities in blending Celtic, Folk, World & Latin music influences. The two joined their personal lives after forming their musical alliance and were married in 2001.  The result is a coupling of intricate and passionate music with genuine and engaging stories.

John McCutcheon
Saturday, May 5th, 8pm, $20 advance @ Daniels Hall – Swallow Hill Music

John McCutcheon is America’s balladeer. His songs sing of the nation’s heritage.  His new album, This Land: Woody Guthrie’s America, is hailed as one of the most comprehensive and stunning tributes to this American icon. Not only is there an all-star version of “This Land Is Your Land” (featuring Willie Nelson, among others), but beautiful versions of Guthrie songs, classic and unknown.

Elizabeth Cook
Friday, January 13th, 8pm, $18 advance @ Daniels Hall – Swallow Hill Music

Country singer/songwriter Elizabeth Cook made her Grand Ole Opry debut on March 17, 2000, appearing repeatedly thereafter — a remarkable achievement considering that, at the time, she was an indie artist with no radio airplay. But such was the excitement generated by her clear, beautiful voice, strong songwriting ability, and live performances, all of which have drawn comparisons to younger, critically respected artists like Kelly Willis and legends such as Dolly Parton.  Today, she’s got her own radio show “Apron Strings” on Sirius Satellite Radio and a new album, Welder. As Elizabeth says of the album, it’s an album rich with “… the tales of the harshness and delicacies of romantic and familial love, occasionally indulging in the rush of being inappropriate.”

Tom Rush
Friday, February 10th, 8pm, $26 advance @ L2 Arts & Culture Center
Tom Rush is a gifted musician and performer whose shows offer a musical celebration…a journey into the tradition and spectrum of what music has been, can be, and will become. His distinctive guitar style, wry humor and warm, expressive voice have made him both a legend and a lure to audiences around the world. His shows are filled with the rib-aching laughter of terrific story-telling, the sweet melancholy of ballads and the passion of gritty blues.  Rush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound. He helped shape the folk revival in the ’60s and the renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s, his music having left its stamp on generations of artists, including James Taylor and Garth Brooks.

Soul Salvation feat. Ruthie Foster & Paul Thorn
Saturday, February 18th, 8pm, $26 advance @ L2 Arts & Culture Center
Ruthie Foster and Paul Thorn have forged a compelling path for the next generation of songwriting blues and soul artists. Rich with honest spirituality and possessing vocal abilities that have critics comparing her to Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin, Ruthie’s passionate songs and scintillating live performances always make for an uplifting experience. Paul Thorn is an authentic new voice in the modern blues scene, bridging classic forms with twenty-first century sensibility. Performing on their own and together with Ruthie’s band, it’s an evening of raw musical emotion, soulful singing and finely honed musical virtuosity guaranteed to be good for the spirit!

Matt Flinner Trio & Grant Gordy Quartet
Saturday, February 25th, 8pm, $17 advance @ Daniels Hall – Swallow Hill Music
Matt Flinner has been featured as a special guest on banjo with Leftover Salmon and in the fall of 2008 was a featured soloist with Trey Anastasio during Orchestra Nashville’s performance of Concertino. He more recently appeared on comedian SteveMartin’s recording The Crow and the Vignola Collectives‘ album, Gypsy Grass. “Flinner provides the next logical evolutionary step to David Grisman’s unique dawg style, and does it with a nod to the past and a vision of the future.” -Bluegrass Now

Grant Gordy put together his own quartet in 2006 that gigged for a couple of years and then got the call from David Grisman to join his own Quintet as guitarist. Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s Senior Editor Scott Nygaard has placed Grant Gordy at the top of his personal list of the best 10 albums of 2010.

Magic Music Reunion
Friday, November 18th, 8pm, $15 advance

The legendary Boulder band, Magic Music, reunites for the first time since 1976 for a special one-time show. The band’s history included performances at Ebbets Field, the 2nd and 3rd Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the famed Denver Folklore Center. Formed in 1969 by Lynn Poyer, George Cahill and Marty Trigg the band toured with Navarro (Carol King’s backup band) and performed shows with David Bromberg, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Cat Stevens, the Youngblood’s, Michael Murphy, Doc Watson to name only a few. The seven original members reuniting for this meeting of one of the most important bands in the acoustic music movement of the early 1970s include  Chris Daniels (Chris Daniels & the Kings), George Cahill, Will Luckey (Alex Taylor’s band), Lynn Poyer, Bill Makepeace, Rob Galloway (Navarro and Leftover Salmon), and Tim Goodman (The Too High Band).

The Klezmatics
Saturday, December 10th, 8pm, $26 advance @ L2 Arts & Culture Center
In the rich and colorful Yiddish language there are expressions that vividly convey virtually any emotion or action. One such phrase is farshafn a sakh freyd un fargenign, which means to give much joy and pleasure. Farshafn a sakh freyd un fargenign perfectly encapsulates the happiness that The Klezmatics have delivered to the passionate millions who have discovered their music since the band’s formation more than 25 years ago. In that time, The Klezmatics have raised the bar for Eastern European Jewish music, made aesthetically, politically and musically interesting recordings, inspired future generations, created a large body of work that is enduring, and helped to change the face of contemporary Yiddish culture. Not bad for a bunch of Americans who each came to klezmer music almost by accident.

Sons & Brothers
Saturday, January 7th, 8pm, $18 advance
Sons and Brothers is the Wolking family from Westcliffe, Colorado. They continue to captivate audiences with their fusion of americana, gospel, western and country-rock music inspired by the band’s founding father, Frank Wolking. Rooted solidly in the Mountain West, the band describes its brand of music as “West Grass.”  Each performance features a dynamic contrast of songs and sounds ranging from stirring ballads and powerful gospel numbers to fire breathing instrumentals, poignant stories of family life, mountains, range and the American West.

Catie Curtis
Friday, January 20th, 8pm, $19 advance
Since the release of her last album in 2009, Catie Curtis has toured extensively, playing a number of diverse venues ranging from Chicago’s legendary Old Town School of Folk Music to the White House. She’s also spent that time writing and testing out new material, developing a collection of masterfully written lyrics that serve as the heart of her newest record, Stretch Limousine on Fire.  On her new album, Curtis, a Lilith Fair alum who’s been dubbed a “folk-rock goddess” by The New Yorker, delivers some of the finest material of her career: ten original songs that push at her own musical boundaries and explore “the difficult edges of passing events” in life, harsh realities that are tempered with moments of fleeting beauty. This temporary nature of life is a theme that pervades the album from the first notes.

A Musical Marriage: an Interview with Tuck and Patti

September 15th, 2011

by Mark Brown

It’s a musical marriage that shouldn’t work. Tuck Andress was a guitarist steeped in the Tulsa blues scene, transplanted to Stanford University. Patti Cathcart was a native San Franciscan absorbing every musical style that scene had to offer in the ‘60s and ‘70s. But when they met, the chemistry was instant, both musically and personally. Now with more than three decades of jazz/blues/R&B together, Tuck & Patti return to Swallow Hill for a Sunday night gig before starting their next CD and heading off on a tour of Australia and Europe. Still firmly rooted in the Bay Area, the husband-and-wife team talked exclusively to Swallow Hill about their lives, laughing and finishing each other’s thoughts.

How much of a role does music play in your daily lives? Guitarists like Richard Thompson say they haven’t put down their guitars for more than two days in 30 years. Are you all music or do you take breaks?

Tuck: “It would be the former but because we’re so busy it’s the latter. If we had time we’d be playing music all the time. We have a pretty busy life. The time we get to focus on music is when we’re recording. Then it’s 100 percent.”
Patti: “It’s always running around. Life is going on but music is the foundation of the whole thing, the backdrop of life. My mind is on a bunch of different projects at any given time. But if we had the luxury we’d just play all the time and write songs.”

Unlike most artists, you seized control of your career more than 10 years ago so that you could continue making the music you wanted as the music industry changed.

Patti: “We were getting ready to re-sign (with a major label) but we were talking about what we could see coming in the future. It was at that point we made the decision to jump ahead of that curve, because we knew everybody was going to be doing it. We thought we might as well do it now, so we jumped into that early on before people were getting dropped right and left. It was for us a dream, we own all our stuff. I think I started writing more and being more prolific! … We recorded every album we ever did in our own studio. We weren’t’ anxious to give that up. It’s obviously more work, but it’s more immediate.”

When it’s time to gear up to record or tour, how does that work?

Tuck: “The touring part is ongoing. We’re remarkably free from the pressure to tour only with a new CD. We can tour at any point. The big shift that happens for us is when it’s time to record a CD we pretty much warn everybody that we’re going to be largely offline….we just go into an intense music mode. Patti’s writing the songs in her head and gradually revealing them to me. I have a guitar strapped on and we can be in any room of the house doing this.”

Your style of writing – the way Patti comes up with musical ideas and you’re able to translate them with your guitar – reminds me of Brian Wilson in the studio, singing his musical ideas to the Beach Boys.

Tuck: “Very much so. It’s always interesting to me to hear the stuff that’s going around in Patti’s head. After decades of playing guitar I have all kinds of filters in my consciousness. She’s not constrained by the same filters I have. It’s great to have the ideas come from Patti, and they’re typically better ideas.”

You both got to absorb the San Francisco music scene when it blossomed in the ‘60s and ‘70s. What did you take from that?

Patti: “Just this feeling that there wasn’t that kind of pressure to fit yourself into the pop machine. Up here it was wonderful to be in an environment where you could just play. Whatever you thought of, you could play it and somebody would come listen to it. You hate to wax poetic about it, but it really was a golden time. I got turned on to so much stuff on the radio.”
Tuck: “Stanford was just a formal structure that I could use to tell people I was doing something with my life. I was taking all my classes pass/fail, doing the minimum and spending a huge amount of time playing guitar. As I look back there was a lot of great stuff going on there, and I missed a lot of it because …I was just woodshedding. For a kid growing up when I did in Tulsa, it was everybody’s dream to be in San Francisco at that time.”

Do you get many children at your shows? We asked Swallow Hill fans to contribute questions and we got a couple from kids.

Patti: “I love that when the kids get to come. I think it’s wonderful. For Tuck it’s a whole generation of young players is coming out.”

Larson is 8 and asks “How do you get the courage to sing up on stage?”

Patti: “I love to sing so much, even if I was afraid or nervous, once I open my mouth and the sound comes out, I just relax into it. I just love singing so much. It makes me not think about how afraid I am or how nervous I am.”

Jasper is 10 and asks “How the heck do you change your pitch so dramatically?”

Patti: “Play around with your voice. It’s a great instrument and you can do a lot with it. If you hear other sounds, try to make those sounds. I try not to put any boundaries on it. Don’t be afraid to make weird noises, the mouth-percussion stuff. It’s having fun. That’s why they call it ‘playing.’ When a musician says he’s going to play some music, the key word is ‘play.’”

There’s an undertone of spirituality in much of your work, yet you never preach. It reminds me of early U2 or T Bone Burnett, where there’s an underlying message but you let it speak for itself without preaching.

Patti: “The conscious decision is yes, it’s dedicated to the spirit of God, whatever that means to someone. So for us that’s a foundation. That’s a deep source of pure love. After that, that’s something I believe you live. You try to live it anyway. You can’t push it on anyone. …I just feel it’s so important to be able to say something of worth, something that casts a light on this crazy, tragic situation we find ourselves in sometimes. I can’t say my way of reaching God is better than their way.”
Tuck: “It’s important for musicians to get out of the way and let the magic happen….we can have our opinions about what’s going on, but I’m not sure the members of the audience care about our opinions anyway. They have their own lives. For us it’s a wonderful exercise to remind ourselves…that we’re just a couple of people in the room, doing our job as good as we can.”

DENVER Some of Colorado’s most acclaimed indie-folkers will come together on stage for a one-night-only run of Anaïs Mitchell’s folk-opera Hadestown.

What started as a stage production in her native Vermont became in 2010 Anaïs Mitchell’s folk-opera album Hadestown, a modern interpretation of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice set in a post-apocalyptic American depression era.

It’s a musical opera that’s unlike any opera you’ve ever witnessed. It’s Indie rock mixed with Dixieland. It’s Homer’s Odyssey as performed by Pink Floyd.” – blogocritics.org

“When 98% of what passes as music today lacks even the remotest twinge of an idea, thought, emotion or worse–heart–Hadestown and Anaïs Mitchell deserve all the listeners and accolades we can give. Pass it on.” - Folk and Acoustic Music Review

In this Denver debut, Anaïs will lead the cast as Eurydice in what she calls “a radio novella” featuring her songwriting and collaborative work with arranger/orchestrator Michael Chorney.  This unique evening of music will also feature our Colorado talent in many of the key roles, including Boulder singer-songwriter Reed Föehl as Hades, a role sung on the album by Greg Brown.

Also joining Anaïs will be KC Groves as Persephone (originally played on the album by Ani DiFranco) and the three women of Paper Bird, Esme and Genny Patterson and Sarah Anderson, who will play the Fates.

Brooklyn-based songwriter Jefferson Hamer will also take the stage in the role, originally played on the album by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, of Orpheus.

Colorado Sings Hadestown is an event not to be missed! Full artist bios and the opera libretto are below. As always purchase tickets early to save by visiting www.swallowhillmusic.org (with no processing fees) or calling (303) 777-1003 ext. 2 to speak with a real-live human being. Additional discounts are available for Swallow Hill Music members.

Thank you for supporting live music at Swallow Hill Music!

Anaïs Mitchell – Eurydice
Anaïs Mitchell is the rare musician who is equally comfortable wielding an acoustic guitar alone onstage, sharing a disc’s worth of alt-country duets, or scripting a vast operatic journey into the underworld.  The reference points of her music may seem to come from all over the map while still interconnected: the country ballads of the Carter Family, the hard-edged cabaret of Brecht and Weill, the story-songs of Randy Newman, the vast narrative scope of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, and the intricately crafted tales of her namesake, bohemian feminist Anaïs Nin, to name a few.  Her album The Brightness inspired a reviewer from the Boston Globe to praise Mitchell’s “vivid snapshots of sweetly ordinary moments,” while Acoustic Guitar called her “a songwriter of startling clarity and depth, equally skilled at turning a melody or lyrical phrase into what you didn’t know you needed until you heard it,” adding that she “weaves her stories into an effortlessly beautiful and cohesive tapestry with the skill of an artisan’s carpenter, showing no seams.”

Reed Föehl – Hades
A recent opener for Marc Cohn at the Chautauqua Summer Concert Series, Boulder singer-songwriter Reed Föehl pulls together a touch of country folk and edgy roots rock with the bold honesty intrinsic to modern songwriting. “He sings like he feels every note… Each song tells a story, all of which he relates astonishingly well.” – The Boston Globe. A Boston native based in Colorado since 1989 Reed’s lush tones and solid songs have been used many times in soundtracks including Dawson’s Creek and the movie Just Friends, and he has performed with the likes of Ray Lemontagne, Dave Matthews, and My Morning Jacket.

KC Groves – Persephone
KC Groves has always been as much of a musical instigator as she has been a talented musician.  Even before she founded the band Uncle Earl in 2000, she formed many bands, organized musical events and gatherings.  She has independently released two albums of original songs featuring Tim O’Brien, Charles Sawtelle, Peter Rowan, Laurie Lewis, Sally Van Meter and other bluegrass icons.  She is best known for strong yet unadorned vocals as well as adept vocal arranging skills.  She plays the guitar, mandolin, and has graced some of the nation’s most premier stages from Telluride to Merlefest.  While not touring with Uncle Earl or her local group, The Jaspers, she proves to be a driving force behind the thriving music scene on the Front Range.  She has produced concerts, started a community radio station, and hosts countless music jams and is more recently on the Board of Directors of the Central Rockies Old Time Music Association.

Paper Bird’s Esme & Genny Patterson and Sarah Anderson – The Fates
As the voices of local favorite Paper Bird, these three women bring a unique folk-Americana sound, and their signature vocal harmonies and knack for capturing a Roaring 20′s flare in a contemporary way is always pleasing to the ears.

Jefferson Hamer – Orpheus
Jefferson Hamer is a singer and guitarist based in Brooklyn, NY. Hailed as an “appealing voice” in 2011 by the New York Times, he has performed his original and traditional music at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, the High Sierra Music Festival, and the Strawberry Music Festival. His songs have been recorded by touring artists including Joy Kills Sorrow and Reed Föehl. He and acclaimed songwriter Anaïs Mitchell are currently writing and recording an album of new adaptations of the 19th century English and Scottish Popular Ballads collected by Francis James Child.

Hadestown Libretto
Hadestown begins in the open air, in a world of poverty. Eurydice asks her lover how he will provide for her in these dark times-Orpheus is sure that the world will provide {Wedding Song}. Orpheus sings, and his singing draws a crowd {Epic Part One}. An old train depot, and everyone’s talking about Hadestown, the walled city under the ground {Way Down Hadestown}. There’s Hermes, the hobo guide and messenger; Persephone, in transit, suitcases in tow; Eurydice, who is more than curious about Hadestown; and Orpheus, who wants no part. When Hades calls, Eurydice receives him {Hey, Little Songbird}. He seduces her: she should leave Orpheus and join him in the wealth and security of his underworld. Eurydice succumbs {Gone, I’m Gone}-was she pushed, or did she jump? The Fates provide an explanation {When the Chips Are Down}. Orpheus is determined to follow Eurydice, and Hermes gives directions {Wait For Me}. Meanwhile, in Hadestown, Hades indoctrinates his worker-citizens {Why We Build the Wall}. But when he turns his back, Persephone presents another side of the underworld, in a speakeasy where she plies her contraband and takes an interest in the newly arrived Orpheus {Our Lady of the Underground}. Eurydice, unaware that her lover is near, laments her decision {Flowers}. Orpheus moves toward her, but is intercepted by the Fates. The rules are the rules-there’s no going back for Eurydice-it’s better not to struggle {Nothing Changes}. Orpheus challenges the Fates {If It’s True}. A fight scene: Orpheus and the speakeasy are exposed {Papers}. In the royal bedroom, Persephone appeals to her husband on Orpheus’ behalf {How Long?}. Orpheus sings again, and this time, Hades hears him {Epic Part Two}. An uprising begins, in Hadestown and in the heart of the king {Lover’s Desire}. Hades comes up with a plan: Orpheus can have Eurydice back if he can walk out of the underworld a few paces ahead of her and not turn around to make sure she’s there {His Kiss, The Riot}. Orpheus and Eurydice begin their ascent {Doubt Comes In}. Later, Eurydice and Persephone sing a reverse elegy for Orpheus {I Raise My Cup To Him}.

About Swallow Hill Music:
Helping people make and enjoy music since 1979, Swallow Hill Music will celebrate its 32nd anniversary in 2011 as one of the largest non-profit institutions of its kind in the United States as a source for roots, folk and acoustic music.

In 2010, Swallow Hill Music served more than 100,000 people through its concert, school and outreach programming.

Three concert venues house more than 200 performances a year, featuring some of the world’s great artists as well as up-and-coming new talent.  Additionally in 2010 Swallow Hill Music began producing the long-running and esteemed Denver Botanic Gardens Summer Concert Series.

Swallow Hill Music offers hundreds of classes, workshops, and private lessons for instruments and interests of all kinds. A faculty of 70 instructors provides training to more than 4,000 students annually, including school outreach programming that takes music and music assemblies into Colorado public schools.

A Tier II member of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, Swallow Hill Music receives public funding and grants, and has over 2,000 members that help cover one-third of all of the organization’s operating costs.  This generosity has helped Swallow Hill Music provide a place to celebrate music that is rarely heard elsewhere in the Rocky Mountain Region, in both the classroom and on stage.

NEW SHOWS ON-SALE NOW!

Baaba Maal
Thursday, October 13th, 8 pm @ L2 Art & Culture Center, $34 advance
Baaba Maal is both a musician and social activist who shares his music in hope for change….. “I think the musician’s role is to give advice, to warn people, and to make them aware of what they might not have thought of themselves. We use melodies and harmonies to make songs enter your mind.”  Baaba Maal’s most recent albumTelevision, is a subtle blending of electronic dance elements and the timeless tradition of West African music.  Following in the footsteps of his 2001 Grammy-nominatedMissing You, this most recent album uses his fusion/ecletic musical style to speak to social justice and peace issues in Africa and around the world, issues he devotes time to as both a musician and as Youth Emissary for the United Nations’ Development Program.

Reed Foehl & The Haunted Windchimes
Saturday, September 10th, 8pm @ Swallow Hill Music, $15 advance
Boulder singer-songwriter Reed Foehl pulls together a touch of country folk and edgy roots rock with the bold honesty intrinsic to modern songwriting.  “He sings like he feels every note… Each song tells a story, all of which he relates astonishingly well.” – The Boston Globe.  A Boston native based in Colorado since 1989 Reed’s lush tones and solid songs have been used many times in soundtracks including Dawson’s Creek, Joan of Arcadia, and the movie Just Friends,  and he has performed with the likes of Ray LemontagneDave Matthews, and My Morning Jacket.

Pueblo’s best export since steel, The Haunted Windchimes present a traditional folk sound spliced with blues and a hint of vintage quality, as if their music might have been written yesterday, or 75 years ago. Setting this group apart is their stunning three-part harmonies, which offer a contrast to the often moody and haunted tone of their music.“The Haunted Windchimes paint an evocative and compelling musical picture with familiar hues of folk, blues and Americana.” -Westword.

California Guitar Trio w/ Fareed Haque
Saturday, October 29th, 8 pm @ Swallow Hill Music, $22 advance
With a whirlwind of instrumental styles fusing classical, rock, blues, jazz, world music, progressive, as well as the quintessential California musical genre surf music, theCalifornia Guitar Trio’s stunning virtuosity and sly sense of humor have earned them an enthusiastic following and wide notoriety. Their music’s significant crossover in the progressive, acoustic and classical music scenes was recently proven again by their Best Instrumental Album of 2010 award from the Indie Acoustic Project for their latest album, Andromeda.  Guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque will open the show and be joining the Trio on stage to showcase his jazz and classical guitar prowess.

Harry Tuft- CD Release

Saturday, October 1, 8 pm @ Swallow Hill Music, $18 advance
Swallow Hill Music is proud to host Harry Tuft, Denver’s Godather of Folk, when he releases his latest CD Harry Tuft and Friends. Joining him on stage will be Rich Moore, Mollie O’Brien, and Janet Feder, plus more to be named! Harry grew up singing and playing a series of instruments from the piano to the clarinet, ukulele, baritone uke, and in college, a six-string guitar. After venturing into Philadelphia’s lively folk scene and eventually relocating to Colorado, Harry was encouraged by friends to open the Denver Folklore Center, which he did in March of 1962. He went on to promote some of the biggest shows in Denver, including Joan Baez’s first Denver show at Red Rocks in 1964. He founded Swallow Hill Music Association in 1979, and to this day the Denver Folklore Center and Harry’s music-making are still going strong!
